MegaLock Hardware Based FIPS LEVEL 3 Encrypted Drive

McAfee

  1. McAfee Anti-Virus (AV) and Anti-Malware (AM) Device Scanning and Detection. Whenever the user first inserts their USB drive, enters their password to access their drive, a scan of the drive occurs. PLEASE ALLOW SEVERAL SECONDS FOR THIS PROCESS, THE DRIVE IS FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY. Any files that are infected with malware and viruses are detected, the infected files are deleted and a warning dialog is displayed to the user. This process is described later in this document.
  2. File Creation Monitoring and Active Anti-Virus (AM) and Anti-Malware (AM) Scanning and Detection. After the device is mounted and the initial AV and AM and scan is complete, a background process continuously monitors the USB device for any new files that are created by the user. This background process also monitors any files that are being changed by the user. If any new files or changed files are detected as having virus or malware, the file is deleted and a warning dialog is displayed to the user. This background process runs from the USB drive itself. It does not install any components on the host PC.
  3. Scanning Files being Encrypted and Decrypted for Viruses and Malware through MegaLock. If the user is using the MegaLock application to protect and encrypt files on their USB drive, the files are scanned by the McAfee AV and AM engine prior to the file being written to, and encrypted by the device. If a file contains a virus or malware, the operation is blocked. All files copied and or saved from their USB device to their PC or Server, those files are also scanned for viruses and malware before the decryption of the file to the PC is allowed to complete. If any files are detected that contain viruses or malware, the operation is blocked.
  4. Automatic Updating of Anti-Virus Signature Files. MegaLock automatically updates the Anti-Virus signature files in the background for the user. The solution first determines if another complimentary McAfee product is installed (e.g. McAfee VirusScan Enterprise) and if so, uses the Anti-Virus files from that product. If a McAfee product is not installed, the software will automatically attempt to update the AV signature files from various McAfee support websites. If the user does not have Internet access, the user is displayed a file open dialog through which they can browse to, or type in a UNC path where their organizational Anti-Virus files are located.
  5. Blocks Non Scanable Files. A key weakness in most Anti-Virus scanning solutions is that certain files can not be scanned (e.g. a password protected zip file). If these files are allowed on a USB drive, the chances of infecting a PC are very high as password protected zip files are one of the main methods to transmit viruses to defeat AV scanning products. MegaLock does not allow non-scanable files to be written to the drive at all. The user must take off password protection so that the file can be scanned before it will be allowed to be written and encrypted to the drive.

Key Points:

  • 10 chances for password entry. After that, the drive will be formatted automatically and all data will be lost. The drive will go to factory default.
  • Password has to be between 8-16 characters long and contains three of the following: upper case, lower case, numbers and special characters.
  • If the virus scan process is stopped, the drive will be ejected.
  • All files copied, dragged, or pasted into the drive will be scanned. If the file scanned and found with a virus, will be deleted immediately.
